Facebook App for iOS Gets a Big Update

Facebook's app for iOS has received a big update that brings the ability to tag friends and places in posts, to share external links from a web view, a new design for Profile and Group walls, and more.

Facebook for iPhone makes it easy to stay connected and share information with friends. Use your iPhone to start a conversation with Facebook Chat, check your friends' latest photos and status updates, look up a phone number, or upload your own mobile photos to Facebook while on the go.

Facebook Messenger Soars to Top Free iPhone App

So far it seems Facebook’s Messenger app is a hit. After launching just Tuesday afternoon, it’s already the number-one free app in the iTunes App Store.

The iOS app has more than 600 customer reviews and with 900 ratings has 3.5 of five stars.

The app has the potential to chip away at the hold of cell carriers. It allows users to send messages and texts through the 750-million-member social network, and it updates in real time, so there’s no need to refresh to see if you’ve received new messages.

“This is replacing text messages in my dock!” one iOS reviewer wrote.

The negative reviews in both the App Store and the Android Market are mostly critical of Facebook now having two apps (though the company told Mashable it does plan to integrate the new message functionality into the main app) and of the fact that Messenger isn’t an instant message app.

Facebook Fires Back at Google+ With New Gaming Features

Facebook has unveiled a slew of new features for Facebook games just hours after Google launched its gaming platform.

The first feature, the Game Ticker, transforms the right-hand Facebook Chat column into a newsfeed of friends’ game activity. The column displays what games your friends are playing as well as their achievements and high scores. It’s designed to be social, so clicking on a Game Ticker story takes you to that game so you can play with your friends. And just like Facebook News Feed, you can control which stories appear and don’t appear in the stream.

The world’s largest social network also introduced a new expanded-screen mode for games. Current players of social games will appreciate the added real estate for harvesting their crops or attacking their enemies. The final addition to Facebook’s gaming platform allows users to bookmark their favorite apps or games so they’re easily accessible from the News Feed.

The move is a counterattack to today’s launch of Google+ Games, which debuted Thursday with 16 games, including Angry Birds and Zynga Poker. It looks like the competition between the two Internet giants is getting even more intense.

Words With Friends [$1.99 / Free] is headed to Facebook. Social giant Zynga Games announced the platform flip this afternoon with a delightful teaser image. Normally, I’d be a little annoyed by the lack of information, but really, what is there to say? Words with Friends is an extremely simple riff on the Scrabble formula with basic visual do-dads and mechanics that we’ve been enjoying for quite a while on iOS.
I’d imagine the reason we don’t have many details here is tied into the fact that nothing meaningful has been changed, aside from the addition of new Facebook-y social elements.

I have installed Facebook for ipad last night and have tested it using only my 3g network.
was able to check in quite fast but some pages or tabs like browsing photos, newsfeeds took quite a long while and then it crashed several times. Maybe that's why it's called "LEAKED"??lolx!

Facebook 'fatigue' strikes as millions shut accounts globally

London, June 14 (ANI): Privacy threats and fatigue has led 1lakh Britons and six million users in the US to shut down their Facebook accounts, with the same pattern expected to follow in other countries too.

Facebook's growth rate has slowed for a second month in a row, ironically, when the social networking site was aiming to reach its goal of one billion active users.

Canada saw a fall of about 1.5 million users of the website, while in Russia and Norway numbers fell by more than 100,000 users.

The company is now relying on developing countries to boost its numbers.

Blogs are abuzz with speculations that the website could one day 'sputter into oblivion,' fearing the fate of its failing rival MySpace.

There is a point at which the site can no longer grow, once it has established itself in a country, according to Eric Eldon, from the website 'Inside Facebook', which obtained the figures.

"By the time Facebook reaches around 50 pc of the total population in a given country, growth generally slows to a halt," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

Internet psychologist Graham Jones has predicted that Facebook users would suffer the same kind of 'fatigue' that comes whenever men and women get bored with trying anything that is new.

"People get terribly excited about something new and after a while the novelty wears off," he explained. (ANI)

Facebook founder changes his status to 'in a relationship'

London, March 25 (ANI): Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has finally confirmed that he has been dating Priscilla Chan for the past seven years.

The 26-year-old has updated his Facebook status to 'in a relationship' to reflect the fact he is taken, reports the Daily Mail.

He added that the change had been "long overdue" but did not explain why he had waited so long.

Observers, however, have noted that often when couples become "in a relationship" on the social network and "engaged" status soon follows.

Zuckerberg and Chan, a Chinese-American from the Boston suburbs, started seeing each other when they were both studying at Harvard University.

Following the new update, Chan's Facebook page also revealed that the pair started their relationship on November 7, 2003, just days after Zuckerberg's infamous Facemash stunt at Harvard.

He was nearly expelled from the university after hacking into different colleges' websites and taking pictures of all the female students, placing them next to each other and asking other students to 'rate' their attractiveness. (ANI)

Delta Airlines Lets Customers Check In ; Get Flight Status via Facebook

Delta Airlines customers can now check in to flights on the company’s Facebook app.

From the Ticket Counter application, Delta customers starting today can now check SkyMiles and preview what amenities are available for various flights, too. Delta launched its its app back in August, at which time it was the first airline to allow users to book flights through the social network.

Delta also has mobile apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry that let users check in for flights, or get the status of a flight or gate number. However, the integration with Facebook means that it’s one less place some users will need to visit.



Using the app, which was developed by 8thBridge, boarding passes can be printed from the Facebook, just like on the website. Delta also lets users share details about their travel plans or itineraries with users over Facebook. For people who check Facebook more often than e-mail, this is a great way to share flight or trip details.

We really like the fact that you can log in to your SkyMiles account, buy tickets and print boarding passes from Facebook. But we would love to see true integration between a SkyMiles account and Facebook — in other words, an option to connect the two systems. I almost never remember my SkyMiles number, but if the two were linked, I could log in with my PIN and last name and be on my way.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Puppy Gets a Facebook Page [PICS]

Woow! Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg loves dogs too.
He got a new puppy named Beast and created his own fan page.


Beast, a fluffy white Puli, got his own Facebook Page, which features pictures of the Facebook CEO and founder and his girlfriend, Priscilla Chan, holding and playing with the pup. So far, Beast has gotten about 2,000 “likes.” Zuckerberg and Chan are listed as the Page owners. Facebook reps could not be reached for comment on the Page’s authenticity.

Facebook "Places"

Finally! Facebook "Places" is active in Singapore!




Some of my friends have been asking me on how to do this so I thought it's cool to add this little tutorial in here.

First, you need to make sure your Location services is active or been turned on.
To check, go to "Settings" in your iphone.






Click "General" then activate "Location Services to On".


You will have options which app you want to activate the service. I only chose few iphone apps like geo-location services app FourSquare and Gowalla because it drains alot of my iphone's battery.




You can now goto your Facebook profile and click "Places".

Facebook is NOT Shutting Down March 15

Ok everyone. Don't panic. Got this news from Mashable few hours ago.



There’s a silly rumor exploding on the Internet this weekend, alleging that Facebook is shutting down on March 15 because CEO Mark Zuckerberg “wants his old life back,” and desires to “put an end to all the madness.”

We’re seeking confirmation from Facebook, but until we get the official word, let’s think about this for a minute. Would Facebook announce a shutdown just a few days after announcing a round of funding, consisting of $450 million from Goldman Sachs and $50 million from Russian investment firm Digital Sky Technologies, on a valuation of $50 billion?

The spurious report was started by a site to which we refuse to link, known for its reports of impending attacks of alien spaceships and false reports of a Michelle Obama pregnancy.

The fact that this absurd hoax spread so efficiently makes us wonder: Will people believe anything?

As soon as we hear from Facebook, we’ll update this post.

It’s been four days since Facebook denied rumors that a Facebook phone was in development. We still believe that the social networking giant doesn’t currently have a branded mobile device in the works, but it’s worth re-examining the situation.
TechCrunch yesterday conducted a thorough interview with Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding the rumor. A crucial part of the discussion occurs when Zuckerberg says:

“…we invest differently in different platforms depending on how big they are, and how many users are there. So, iPhone is the one we’re investing in the most now, and Android increasingly. If Windows Phone 7 takes off, then I’m sure we’ll put resources on that.

And maybe we’ll build specific apps for iPhone and Android. And then, for something that is as important as iPhone or Android, we’ll also build integration into the operating system. So for iPhone, we built in contact syncing, and for Android we integrated and did contact syncing pretty seamlessly. The question is – what could we do if we also started hacking at a deeper level, and that is a lot of the stuff that we’re thinking about.”

The statement is a concise overview of Facebook’s current approach to mobile, especially as it pertains to hardware. It outlines Facebook’s strategy to develop applications for prominent mobile platforms and, when it makes sense, work toward deeper mobile integrations for enhanced social experiences.

The story should have ended there — but, of course, it didn’t. Bloomberg decided to get involved, writing, “Facebook Inc. is working with mobile-handset manufacturer INQ Mobile Ltd. on two smartphones that may be carried by AT&T Inc., according to three people familiar with the matter.”

Bloomberg’s report was enough to make TechCrunch question its own interview with Zuckerberg. The chain reaction has sent everyone back to speculating about the Facebook phone. The thing is, Facebook has been working with INQ for a couple of years now — it’s well-known that the companies share a common investor in Chinese billionaire Li Ka-Shing.

When INQ Mobile released the INQ1 back in December of 2008, the level at which Facebook was integrated led many at the time to describe it as “the Facebook Phone.” Zuckerberg was even quoted in a statement from INQ saying, “We are really happy to be working with INQ to bring its customers a deeply-integrated Facebook experience on the new INQ1 handset.”

In the two years since the INQ1 was released, Facebook has made a major play for mobile audiences. According to Facebook’s stats, Facebook Mobile currently has more than 150 million mobile users accessing the site with at least 200 mobile providers working to deploy and promote Facebook Mobile products. This isn’t a surprise; by all accounts, mobile is the next big digital frontier.

Facebook may very well release a phone some day, but that day isn’t today and now isn’t the time. What we have here is some exaggerated excitement over a relationship that has been around for years. So is Facebook still working with INQ? Yes, most definitely. But Facebook and INQ continuing to work with one another doesn’t mean that they’re preparing to release a Facebook Phone anytime soon.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now richer than Apple CEO Steve Jobs, according to the latest Forbes 400 rankings.
This year, Zuckerberg, 26, added $4.9 billion to his fortune–vaulting to #35 on the Forbes 400 with an estimated fortune of $6.9 billion. Why the jump? Recent private equity investments in Facebook valued the firm at around $23 billion–more than triple its 2009 value of $7 billion. Illiquid private shares in secondary markets point to an even richer valuation.

Steve Jobs ranks #42 on the list with a net worth of $6.1 billion; $1 billion higher than last year.

RIP Facebook Gifts

Facebook is winding down its “Gift Shop” feature, the company announced today. Facebook Gifts will stop operating on August 1, although gifts you’ve received previously will remain on your wall.

It’s a surprising move from Facebook, who stands to become a significant player in online transactions thanks to Facebook Credits. Given that gifting is a great advertisement for the benefit of making transactions on Facebook, we can only imagine that giving Gifts is wildly unpopular. Facebook Credits perhaps doesn’t need a helping hand, either: The rapid rise of Facebook games has assured the success of the Credits scheme.

If you’re into gifting on Facebook, you still have a few options: Birthday Cards and Pieces of Flair to name a couple.

Facebook Will Add a “Panic Button” for UK Teens [via Mashable]

Facebook will help UK teens fight cyber abuse and bullying by deploying a panic button on its sites. Teens will be encouraged to click it when suspicious that they’re being targeted for abuse.

The button will actually connect the teens with resources hosted by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), an organization run in part by the UK government. Teens will be given advice and resources on dealing with potential threats on the Internet, and they may also report users who they believe are acting inappropriately toward them.

The tool will be advertised on the home pages of teenage Facebook users.

Why the Change?
A UK official joined the mother of murdered teenager Ashleigh Hall in a call for the deployment of the button on Facebook. The tool is already present on other sites, including Bebo. Facebook resisted joining them at first, claiming that it already offers reporting tools, but the BBC says that Facebook finally agreed to do it after 44 police chiefs signed a petition.

Advocates argue that integration with the well-established CEOP organization will help authorities take legal or police action more swiftly and accurately.

The button will be part of a larger application run by CEOP. We don’t have all the details yet, but we do know that there will also be a landing page with basic safety information for teenagers. Facebook already launched something similar on its own with the revamped Safety Center two months ago.

Potential Problems
Facebook rep Sophy Silver was quoted by the BBC saying that the reporting tool will act as a “viral awareness campaign” by informing your friends when something’s up too.

While we’re all for tools that help protect teenagers from sharing Ashleigh Hall’s fate, we’re concerned about the potential abuses of this tool. People will inevitably make errors when using it, and some might even abuse it as a means of harassment or humiliation against peers.

Here’s to hoping that there will be strong protections against that kind of abuse in the final product. Do you have any ideas about how Facebook and CEOP could make a system that protects teens but that isn’t ripe for abuse?
